The primary function of an electronic article surveillance system is to make it more difficult for shoplifters to operate and, ideally, to prevent them from doing so altogether. From the perspective of secure retail operations, it is important that the products purchased by the retailer for sale are sold at a reasonable profit and not stolen, as this results in the loss not only of the profit but also of the purchase costs. The majority of shoplifting incidents can be prevented or reduced through the use of an effective merchandise protection system.
Today, the electronic anti-theft systems commonly used in shops are based on similar principles. The essence of this is that products sold in the shop are fitted with a device that can be detected by another component of the system – the anti-theft gate. When the product is paid for, this device is deactivated or removed using technical equipment at the till, depending on whether it is a single-use tag or a non-deactivatable device, such as a label. If this happens, the anti-theft gate positioned at a suitable distance from the till will not sound an alarm. However, if the anti-theft device is carried through the gate’s detection range along with the product – an attempted theft – the gate alerts those nearby with a clear audible and visual signal.
